Fourth
grade Westward Adventure
Our Westward Adventure provides students with an
enjoyable and meaningful opportunity to learn about the
Gold Rush and Westward Adventures as experienced by
early pioneers. Students visit actual historical
sites, pan for gold, interpret the Great Seal, explore
the Capitol, experience life in a Gold Rush community,
make a decorative tin product as early tinsmiths did,
participate in a native American dance, view forts that
guarded San Francisco Bay, work on the railroad, and
ride a cable car. The Gold Rush and early Western
history come alive for each student.

American history is explored through the themes of
personal risk, commitment, sacrifice, and national
values. The Discover DC program focuses on the
establishment of our nation, the Civil War, and
twentieth-century America. Students are challenged
to analyze historical events, turning points, and heroes
of our past, and, buy using our nation's capital as the
stage, evaluate their roles in a continuing American
story.
Designed to enhance middle-school social studies
curriculum, this program will help students gain a
deeper understanding of our history, the consequences of
choices, and their role in a continuing American story.
